Activity 1: Share Your Reflection
According to the World Bank, 37% of children in the world are forced to read and write in a language which they neither speak nor understand. What kind of challenges these children must be facing? Share your reflection.
Some of the main challenges faced by the students are:

2. Simple grammar difficulties while reading.
Shyness in speaking.
3. Fear of making mistakes.
4. Lack of motivation.
5. Defering to their native languages while learning.
6. Dependence on their teachers instead of trying to overcome their difficulties.
7. Difficulties retaining new knowledge learned in classroom.
In almost all schools, children are mostly introduced to a new medium of language for education. They are taught in a language which is totally new to their mother tongue. Some of the challenges faced by them are:

3) Children face the difficulty of bridging the gap between their acquired mother tongue and the new language.
4) New language may impact the children by favouring the bright learners from that of the weaker ones.

Most of the children dont speak English at home.However, when they are sent off to School, most school teaches in English and thats when they have problems comprehensing what is going on. At the most, they try to memorise it without knowing the meanings
ReplyDeleteThese children simply tries to Copy with what the teacher says or write.
ReplyDeleteThey do not understand any concept being taught by teacher, means, they learn very very less that what they should learn. I reflect this to myself at primary grade and It happened to me. I simply gazed at teacher speaking English and felt that teacher is singing a song.
Teaching with mother tongue is very important and for this to happen, the posting of primary teacher teaching upto grade 3 should be done as per his/her mother tongue(teacher's posting should be rationalised)

Children found it hard understand and so fail to find the study exciting and enjoyable. They will find it hard to find a balance between the mother tongue and the new language
ReplyDeleteone of the most difficulty generally a child face with a mew language is difficulty in understanding,perception,unclear concepts etc . As result of this child could not get the actual knowledge and information whilch the child is supposed be informed or learned. ..So the aim of education could not be reached.

Scared and nervous children
No opportunities for comprehension, higher order thinking, imagination and prediction in the classroom. An atmosphere of fear and hesitation in the classroom will developed. No confidence in themselves to share their thoughts and feelings and will always be a teacher centered classroom because children in such a situation is not having space for children's language which they can speak and understand in the classroom.
When children are forced to read and write in a language which they neither speak or understand in the primary schools face severe learning disadvantages due to the gap between their home language and the school language. Due to unfamiliar languages in the primary year of their schooling, these children end up learning a language that they do not speak or understand. This prevent them from meaningfully engaging with teaching learning process in school which in turn lead to feeling of helplessness and low self esteem in children. Their identity self confidence are also gravely injured leading to negative impact on their academic performance.
ReplyDeleteIf the children are force to read and write in a language which they neither speak nor understand, They will face various challenges such as; difficulties in reading and writing, hard to achieve foundational literacy and numeracy, hard to bridge the gap between home language and school language, limited understanding etc.

2- Lack of Level of readiness to learn.
3-Lack of confidence.
4- Lack of understanding.
5-It's just rote memory learning and no qualitative learning.
When the classroom language is different from their home language( primary students)they faced challenges like

ect.. As result learning becomes time pass. An example many students feel light when they are promoted to class 9 as hindi is not Compulsory subject in manipur. Some students also started exploring their talent in other subject.

ReplyDeleteLanguage barrier in the classroom leave students behind from the start. How do one learn if one does not understand? Students learning through a second language often struggle to express themselves if they don’t have a full command of that language, it hinders progress and this can lead to emotional stress and affect their ability to learn.
ReplyDeleteMajor challenges faced by children are lack of confidence, teacher students relationship, freely expression of their thoughts, understanding ,creativity, motivation etc.It leads to children hesitate to go to school ,boring in learning and passive participation of students in learning, rote memory learning and degrades qualitative learning.
ReplyDeleteTo these type of children learning will not interesting as they will not understand what they are learning and taught. They will resort to rote learning since they do not understand the meaning of what they read and write.

ReplyDeleteMany children face big problems when they were taught in the classroom/school with new language which are not familiar to their mother tongues.This language which are totally new to them make them more confusing and disturbing.Primary level as per RTI should be introduced the mother tongues or the most commonly spoken language in that particular areas/places to accommodate better learning.
ReplyDeleteThis situation is much relatable in tribal/ minority groups as they speak different mother tongue in their home. When children go to school they are introduced different languages which is very new and unfamiliar to them. So children may face many challenges in learning education such as 1) they will face lack of understanding of the basic concept 2) they will be unable to express their thoughts and ideas 3) less communication with teachers and so less understanding of teachers towards their students understanding of the concept or ideas.

Which sometime children hesitate to go to school and some children might find it difficult or embarrassed in school.
Children are mostly taught in English in school ,so they find it difficult to understand properly in the initial stage ,but later on they also are able to understand and speak as well as write, however some problem they face are , inability to understand in English, inability to write and inability to speak,lack of confidence

At a young age a child's mind is really sensitive so putting burden on a child like including syllabus by forcing them to read and write is wrong. this could lead a child into depression due to increased syllabus and this should not be allowed

ReplyDeleteHowever, in India, around 35% of children in primary grades are studying in a language that is unfamiliar to them. When these children enter school in grade 1, they have a limited or no understanding of the school language which is used as the medium of instruction.
It is difficult to imagine how these children are facing different kinds of challenges in the teaching- learning process who are taught in an unfamiliar language but they can achieve the objective of NIPUN Bharat mission, i.e., to read fluently with deep comprehension and write independently in the school language by end of grade 3.
In our primary grade classrooms.‘Language’ is the most important medium of learning in school education. In other words, language forms the foundation of all learning that takes place in the classroom. When children speak or listen to others, when they read a story or a poem and engage in processes such as logical thinking, reasoning, drawing inferences from a text, they do so through the medium of language.
However, all this is only possible when children have well developed language skills and a strong command over language. In the early years of schooling, children bring with them knowledge of the language they have grown up listening to and speaking at home.
By not including their familiar languages in the classroom teaching-learning process, we are depriving these children of their fundamental right to learn.
To ensure that children learn effectively in the classroom, the best possible strategy is to use their home language as a medium of instruction in the initial years of schooling, while gradually introducing new languages into the curriculum.
Some problems faced by children may be learning mainly based on rote memorization without the basic concept, lack of understanding, lack of confidence, lack of interest, etc.

As they are force to learn to a new language and to adopt to it, the students lack confidence, to even understand the basic concepts, lack of interest, clarity in receiving what their teachers have taught them, etc.

ReplyDeleteWhen these children enter school in class 1 to 3, they have limited understanding of the school language which is used as the medium of instruction. They will find difficulties in doing home work and various area where there is need for good foundation in literacy and mathematical skills.
Generally we can say that, those child will face
1. Problem in understanding the topic taught
2. Problem in sharing ideas.
3. Shyness in speaking and talking.

3. Lack of confidence and fear of making mistakes while speaking
4. Lack of motivation etc
Being taught in an unfamiliar language would bring lots of difficulties for children trying to learn something as they would find it hard to follow the teacher and understand what is being taught even though the lesson might be an easy one. The children would also more likely find it really hard to express themselves correctly trying to find the right words even though they may know the answer to the queries of the teacher.

The challenges face by the children are: Articulation,the production of speech sounds,Fluency,the rhythm and flow of speech and Voice,the quality of pitch,resonance or loudness.

If the children are taught in a language which is totally strange to them, it is natural that they will face a lot of problems. The main thing is they won't be able to grasp the points the teacher is teaching. Consequently they can't draw attention and will feel bored. Such situations lead to drop out of many students from their classes.

Students learning a second language often struggle to express themselves if they don’t have a full command of that language.This can lead to emotional stress and affect their ability to learn. Parents may also not speak the language used in school. This hinders progress even further when they can’t understand their children’s homework in order to help them complete it. Thus, the use of mother tongue in teaching is mandatory in the overall child's learning process.

Learning under the pressure does not lead to a good result of studying to children. In turn children who have to learn what they do not like may not only feel stressful but also lose their passion and motivation in studying languages and other subjects as well.
